U.S. Olympic Women’s Hockey Team To Take Victory Lap In Tampa

TAMPA, FL – The gold medal-winning 2018 U.S. Olympic Women’s Ice Hockey Team will take a victory lap, or two, around center ice at the Amalie Arena in Tampa on Wednesday, Feb. 28, as part of the team’s victory tour. Tampa Bay fans will officially welcome the women’s hockey team home at the Tampa Bay Lightning home game against the Buffalo Sabres, which begins at 7 p.m. The 23 team members, wearing their Olympic gold medals and Team USA jerseys, will participate in a ceremonial puck drop at the Lightning game. On Tuesday, Feb. 27, the Olympic team appeared on the Ellen talk show and were honored at a Los Angeles Kings home game against the Vegas Golden Knights before heading to familiar turf, umm… ice, in Tampa. The team became very familiar with Tampa while training all summer at Florida Hospital Center Ice in Wesley Chapel, a new ice sports facility that opened a year ago. Subscribe All of the team members except one, who hails from California, are from Northern states: Michigan...

Tampa Bay homes prices soar by double-digits in January

This four-bedroom, five- bath home overlooking the 17th hole on Tampa’s Palma Ceia golf course sold for $3.4 million in January, making it Hillsborough County’s priciest sale of the month. [Courtesy of High Res Media] Home prices soared in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties in January, the highest gains in several months. Prices for single family homes also rose in Hernando and Pasco as the shortage of available homes showed no immediate sign of easing. The bay area market reflected a broader trend of rising prices and sluggish sales. "The utter lack of sufficient housing supply muted overall sales activity in much of the U.S. last month," said Lawrence Yun, chief economist for the National Association of Realtors. "It’s very clear that too many markets right now are becoming less affordable and desperately need more new listings to calm down the speedy price growth." Will there be another raid on affordable housing funds? Yes, say House Republicans.

A view of debris in front of Lori Jones and Kim Kenney’s tent at Castaways RV Park at Father Tony Way & Avenue C in Big Pine Key. Hurricane Irma has led to an affordable housing crisis in the Keys. Hurricanes Irma and Maria decimated housing stock in the Florida Keys, left hundreds homeless and brought thousands more to Florida from Puerto Rico, but those hoping to use the money the state has set aside to construct affordable housing are going to face a battle again this year. The Florida House says it’s not a priority. Anyone who purchases real estate in Florida pays a documentary stamp tax on the transaction, a portion of which is earmarked for trust funds to develop affordable housing. This year, the trust funds will collect about $322 million. For the 11th consecutive year, Republican leaders in the Florida House have decided to sweep more than half of the money collected out of the trust funds and use it to plug budget holes and fund other priorities — a total of $182 milli...
